Opened a docx in Word with narrow margins, put the diagram emf on the page, put the equation emf on top positioned as required, then ajusted page size to eliminate too much whitespace, saved result as pdf. Went to Inkscape, opened pdf as Poppler/Cairo import, exported result as emf.
